morgueFILE (free) - this link takes you to a photography website which has quite a good tutorial (10 lessons) by Jodie Coston covering all the basics plus some nice photographs.
Picasa Image Software (free) - this is quite a good, simple to use image program for manipulating photos using slider bars.
Irfanview Image Viewer (free) - this is a simple to use image viewer with various tools including red eye reduction, greyscale, resize etc.
GIMP (free) - this is a powerful image manipulation programme similar to Adobe Photoshop. Recommended by Which Consumer Magazine. However it is quite complicated so is particularly useful to competant users.
Adobe Photoshop - the industry standard for image manipulation. The full Photoshop programme is very expensive but Photoshop Elements is a more affordable alternative which will suffice for most users.
